Salah furious over image rights dispute with Egyptian FA

CAIRO — Premier League leading scorer Mohamed Salah said Sunday he is insulted over the unauthorized use of his image and blames the Egyptian Football Association in a dispute that comes less than two months before the World Cup in Russia.

The Egyptian soccer star is furious his image features prominently on the outside of the national team’s plane, which was provided by official sponsor WE.

Liverpool’s winger, a huge celebrity in his native Egypt, has a sponsorship deal with rival telecommunications firm Vodafone.

"Sorry but this is a major insult … I was hoping the deal would be classier than this," Salah tweeted Sunday.

Officials at Egypt’s soccer association did not respond to repeated phone calls seeking comment.

However, Egypt’s Youth and Sports Minister Khaled Abd Elaziz said he is communicating with all of the concerned parties to solve the dispute.

"Especially since Egypt is going to participate in the 2018 World Cup," Elaziz tweeted hours after Salah’s. "Mohamed Salah is an idol for Egyptian youth, loving and loyal to his homeland and represents his country in Europe in the best way."

Ramy Abbas, Salah’s agent, said he has been waiting for a response from Egyptian officials.

"We have not even been contacted for a resolution! Nothing! Complete silence!" he said in his own tweet on Saturday.

Abbas argued that EFA and its sponsor, advertising agency Presentation, had no right to use Salah’s image without written consent from MS Commercial, Cayman, the firm that owns Salah’s image rights.

Salah’s tweet went viral on social media and Egyptian fans launched a twitter hashtag, Support–Mohamed–Salah to show solidarity with their beloved player.

Egypt opens World Cup competition in June. The country qualified for the tournament for the first time in 28 years and its chances in Group A against host Russia, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay rest largely on the 25-year-old Salah’s shoulders.

TORONTO — Canadian international Scott Arfield is set to leave Burnley for Glasgow Rangers.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche confirmed the move and the Scottish Sun reported that Arfield, whose contract with the English Premier League side expires at the end of the season, has agreed to a three-year deal with Rangers. Scottish reports say Rangers plan to announce Arfield’s signing before Sunday’s Old Firm clash at Celtic.

"Rangers contacted the club, through the right channels, to speak about Scotty," said Dyche, who brought Arfield to Burnley. "He wanted a new challenge and the Rangers’ one is an inviting one for him. He was a Rangers fan as a kid and also this a really good opportunity for him."

A native of Livingston, Scotland, Arfield qualifies to play for Canada through his Toronto-born father. Arfield’s grandfather was in the military and was briefly stationed in Canada.

The 29-year-old Arfield debuted for Canada in March 2016 and has won 12 caps for Canada.

Dyche called Arfield "a big part of our successes."

"Scotty has been an amazing servant to us, the way he conducts himself as a professional, the way he is around the community when needed to be, and then on the pitch he has been a very important player for the number of years he’s been with us," Dyche was quoted on the Burnley website.

"We are always respectful of our players and we’re not going to jeopardize anything in their future if something that comes along that’s to their benefit and Scotty feels this one is."

After the 2-1 defeat in Newcastle, Wenger blamed the lack of VAR in the Premier League.

Remembering Wolves’ game-changing summer transfer window of 2018

Remembering Wolves’ game-changing summer transfer window of 2018

Remembering Wolves’ game-changing summer transfer window of 2018

Today is the tenth anniversary of the erection of the Jorge Mendes statue outside Molineux.

Many years ago, back when humans were still the dominant species, The Portuguese super agent used his considerable connections to turn Wolves from a mid-table Championship team to Premier League juggernauts.

The likes of Ruben Neves and Diogo Jota ensured the club’s promotion to the top flight.

But it was in the summer of 2018 when the game changed forever…

Fitting sponsor

Cristiano Ronaldo and James Rodriguez were a stretch too far for the newly promoted Wolves but all of Mendes’ other clients were up for grabs.

Wolves sent a warning message out on the first day of the summer transfer window by announcing the signing of Angel Di Maria.

Frustrated with a lack of game time at PSG, the Argentine leapt at the chance to don the famous orange shirt.

He would go on to exorcise his Premier League demons, being named in Team of the Season in his first campaign back on these shores.

His brace at Old Trafford lives long in the memory…

Speaking of Man United rejects…

Strike partnerships may be all the rage again these days but back in 2018 they were few and far between.

Wolves are partially to blame for the resurgence in popularity of front twos as they’re double signing of Radamel Falcao and Andre Silva proved mightily effective.

El Tigre famously went on to win back-to-back Golden Boots.

A necessary evil

Every team needs a bastard.

Three-time Champions League winner Pepe was brought in as an experienced head in defence.

However, this transfer proved to be ill-advised as the Portuguese centre-back was sent off in every one of his five appearances for Wolves.

He was unceremoniously released the following summer and went on to have a moderately successful career in WWE.

Flair. Pure flair

Remembered as one of the Premier League’s greatest ever impact subs, Ricardo Quaresma remains a cult hero in the Black Country to this day.

The trivelas, the rabonas, the panenkas… what a highlight reel.

This great influx of talent peaked on deadline day when Faouzi Ghoulam, Eliaquim Mangala, Andre Gomes and Renato Sanches all signed for Wolves in flurry of activity that nearly hospitalised Jim White.

You can do your own Scottish accent at this pointSky Sports

The moment Sanches donned a Wolves shirt he reverted to the bullish midfielder who grabbed games by the throat during his Benfica days.

Gomes brought with him lessons learned from his time at Barcelona which helped instil an elite mentality among the squad.

The ‘Mendes Nine’ (as they came to be known) ensured a joyous return to the Premier League for Wolves as they qualified for the Champions League, pipping Spurs to fourth place on the last day of the season.

No need to look too much into it either, definitely all legal…Reuters

What a window, eh?

It’s a real shame Mendes was imprisoned soon after…

Relegation-threatened Cologne will not extend head coach Stefan Ruthenbeck's contract beyond the end of the Bundesliga season, the club confirmed on Thursday. The 45-year-old, who replaced now-Borussia Dortmund boss Peter Stoger in December, will part ways with the Billy Goats when his short-term deal expires on June 30. Cologne sit bottom in Germany's top flight and are six points adrift of a relegation play-off spot with five games remaining. "I am grateful for the opportunity and the confidence the club has shown me and will do everything in my power to keep the club in the Bundesliga," Ruthenbeck said in a statement. "If that does not work out, we'll at least end the season with decency and our heads held high, just as our fans deserve and as befits this club." 4 reasons why MXGP Pro will make you love motocross (yes… really)

The thought of launching yourself off a huge mud ramp may be pretty scary – but there’s a way of getting all those thrills from the safety of your sofa.

Enter MXGP Pro, the latest entry from Italian developers Milestone, as they once again tackle the ever-growing world of motocross.

CLAIM YOUR FREE £20 BET Sun Bets have this brilliant offer when you sign up and bet a fiver

It’s a sport that’s not particularly well covered in the UK – but in the rest of Europe and America, hundreds of thousands fans flock to watch riders wrestle powerful dirt bikes around precarious courses.

So, why is it worth your attention?

Here we pick four reasons why MXGP Pro deserves to win over a load more new fans.

MXGP Pro is powered by Unreal 4 – and looks stunning

Graphics

EA Sports may make a song a dance about FIFA 18’s Frostbite  technology but Unreal Engine 4 is arguably more impressive – and it’s what is powering MXGP Pro.

The result is a silky smooth ride with a glorious attention to detail.

Mud flicks up, motion blur helps create a real sensation of speed – while sunlight peeks through gaps in the trees.

Online races promise to be absolute carnage

The preview event, which was set near stunning Lake Garda, Italy, allowed us to appreciate first-hand just how well-realised environments are in the game.

Despite being a work-in-progress, there’s a level of detail here that you’d expect from the likes of Gran Tursimo and Project Cars 2.

Different weather systems were also on display – with rain dramatically changing the look and feel of the course.

Squint your eyes and MXGP Pro looks real sometimes

Handling

Milestone listened to the community and has now added a “mechanical” approach to the game. This lets you tweak and set up every part of your bike based on real values and metrics.

While a more causal mode caters to the pick-up-and-play audience, it’s this ‘pro’ section that really helps set the game apart.

Don’t look directly at the sun during races

Thanks to improved air physics, grip and collision behaviour – even the smallest tweak will have a huge impact on performance. Choose wisely.

To help you find a set up that’s right for you, make sure to visit the training Compound, which has been improved to allow for more space. Here, you can practice anything from corners, to starts and jumps.

Just be sure to wear a helmet.

Improved physics and handling make it a real challenge – but you can tone the difficulty if you’re after a more casual experience

Wise words

To make the experience as authentic as possible, Milestone has worked closely with a number of pro riders, including Tony Cairoli, Tim Gajser, and Gautier Paulin.

“This year we have been able to completely redefine the physics and the entire gameplay experience of MXGP,” said Lead designer Luca Simonotti.

“We started from the analysis of suspension, we compared the pressure with fork extensions as well as single shock-absorbers using the same values of official MXGP athletes’ bikes; the same process has been done with the ECU mapping.”

Sounds pretty cool to us.

Practice in the Compound to perfect those corners

Brutal crashes

Need we say more?

MXGP is home to some pretty brutal crashes, which have been replicated in wince-inducing detail in this year’s game.

Plus, thanks to the power of Unreal – mass crashes are also possible – making for truly spectacular online races.

MXGP Pro lands on PS4, Xbox One and PC on June 29.

Which four players make it onto your Mount Rushmore of football?

Which four players make it onto your Mount Rushmore of football?
Dream Team FC
Which four players make it onto your Mount Rushmore of football?

Four players, one hypothetical mountain.

We want to know your chosen quartet for a football equivalent of Mount Rushmore.

The GOAT PresidentsGetty - Contributor

In the hills of South Dakota, granite faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Rooseveldt and Abraham Lincoln stare out at the landscape with great majesty.

If you could bestow this honour upon four footballers, who would you select?

One way of going about it, is to simply pick who you think are the four best players ever.

You may then end up with a foursome of Pele, Diego Maradona, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, or something similar…

We’ve popped in Cruyff and Beckenbauer in place of those young bucks for a more historical slant here

However, we reckon it’s more fun to pick four players who have most shaped your experience of football.

We sent this (admittedly loose) brief around the office and these are the responses we got back…

Nick Elliott (Leeds) – Maldini, Iniesta, Messi, (Brazilian) Ronaldo

This is beautiful but it also hurts our eyes

All my minutes in incredibly amateur football have been spent at centre-back and so Paolo Maldini’s demi-God status in the world of defending earned him a spot on my mountain.

Andres Iniesta has me under some kind of hex as I have considered him my all-time favourite player for nearly a decade now.

No explanation needed for the other two.

Sean Cook (Spurs) – Beckham, Keane, Ronaldinho, Van der Vaart

We’re imagining curtains era BecksGetty Images Sport Classic - Getty

The hairstyles, the boots, the kits — Becks was more than a footballer to me, he was a brand.

Robbie Keane is the reason I fell in love with Spurs and Rafa van der Vaart is the reason I stayed in love with them.

As for Ronaldinho, he was the ultimate flair player, performing magic in a foreign land and any glimpse of him was special.

Michael Golson (Man United) – Zidane, Totti, (Brazilian) Ronaldo, Maldini

Sorely missedAFP

Very simply, my four favourite players when I was young.

The gatekeepers, the seducers.

Samuel Gilbert (Arsenal) – Lahm, Casillas, Lampard, Henry

Lamps… is that you?

Lampard was a midfielder who seemed to score every week, I can’t help but appreciate him.

I’m a sucker for goalkeeper captains, especially those who wear short sleeves.

Casillas is a great leader and my love for him was confirmed when he popped up in ‘Goal 2’.

Ed Bearryman (Leyton Orient/Peterborough) – Lineker, Zidane, Bergkamp, Charley

The non-flying DutchmanPA:Press Association

No justification needed for Zizou and Bergkamp.

Lineker was my first television hero (playing, not the crisp adverts) and Ken Charley was my first in-the-flesh hero.

I watched the M1 Didier Drogba for Peterborough in the early 1990s and it was liking watching Superman at work, to me anyway.

James Robinson (Fulham) – Xavi, Ronaldinho, Messi, Dembele

A unique breedGetty - Contributor

Has the ever been a midfielder so widely lauded for not scoring or assisting and essentially just turning around in circles as Mousa Dembele?

His habit of making it look like he’s a Year 10 who’s invaded a Year 7 playground game makes up for any so-called deficiencies.

No, you can’t have your ball back.

You know about the rest.

Liam Spencer (West Ham, obviously) – Parker, Tevez, Noble, Firmino

He literally scored seven goals for West HamAFP

(It’s worth noting that Liam is eye-wateringly young and an openly biased Hammer…)

Scott Parker and Mark Noble are leaders of men capable of carrying those around them, committed to the cause.

They achieved success through hard work, rather than flashy tricks.

Tevez is a brilliant maverick unconcerned by the opinions of others while Roberto Firmino overcame initial doubt to prove himself — ability and tenacity combined.

Adam Jones (Liverpool) – Riquelme, Gerrard, Alonso, Ronaldinho

The makings of a handy five-a-side team

Riquelme is the player who made me realise football existed outside the Premier League — the most compelling No10 I’ve ever seen.

Gerrard will always be Mr Liverpool, but Xabi Alonso made the hardest facets of the game look effortless — great hair too.

Jimmy Lloyd (Spurs) – Messi, Cantona, Kane, Cole

The King™Getty Images - Getty

Cantona shaped the the style and substance of the Premier League more than any other player — his emperor-like stare would look magnificent in granite.

I consider Ashley Cole the father of the modern full-back, the first man not from Brazil to excel in defence and attack.

Insiders tell of a generous, seasoned pro and not the tired ‘Cashley’ stereotype.

It’s about time we showed him some love.

Nick Rostron-Pike (Man United, very obviously) – Scholes, Cantona, Ronaldo, Solksjaer

About time CR7 got a mentionGetty - Contributor

At a time when United had, arguably, the greatest front four in Premier League history, it was always Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who pulled on my heart-strings.

The Baby-Faced Assassin even got a glowing tribute from Ronaldo himself when he hung up his boots – and you’ll struggle to find many of them.

Paul Scholes has to be in the list as well – purely because he’d hate the idea of his 18-metre face on the side of some rock.

Andrew Butler (Leyton Orient) – Messi, Henry, Baines, Lockwood

Okay Butler, whatever you say mate…Getty - Contributor

I love left-backs.

Leighton Baines is undoubtedly the coolest footballer in my lifetime; has a wand of a left foot, takes a guitar to England training camps, and genuinely doesn’t care what people think of him.

Matt Lockwood. Sweet Matt Lockwood. The Leighton Baines of the lower divisions.

He’s an Orient legend, stayed at the club despite attention from some Premier League clubs, and once scored an 11 minute hat-trick when we were 3-0 down. From left-back.
